Is Uptown Finally On Its Way to Becoming One of the North Side's Hottest Neighborhoods?

It feels like there’s been talk about Uptown eventually becoming Chicago’s new hottest neighborhood for awhile now, but progress has been slow to say the least, and especially for residents already living in the area who are hoping to see improvements made throughout the community.

But with several new projects possibly in the works, Uptown could finally be getting the makeover it richly deserves, which could be the beginning of something special to happen in one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

If you haven’t been keeping up, here’s a quick look at just some of what’s being discussed for the Uptown community:

New Apartment Tower at Sheridan & Wilson

Being planned for the southeast corner of Sheridan and Wilson is a proposed transit-oriented development that, if approved, would being 147 new rentals to the neighborhood, as well as 5,500 square feet of ground level retail space and parking for 29 vehicles. As reported by Curbed, the building’s design was just sightly modified earlier this month.

Broadway & Wilson Transit-Oriented Development

Another TOD is being planned for Broadway and Wilson, which is a prime location right in the heart of the neighborhood. Just steps from the renovated Wilson CTA station, this beautiful new building, which also just underwent some design changes, could bring 197 rentals, 11,500 square feet of retail space, and 41 parking spaces to 4601 N. Broadway if approved.

High-Rise-Grocery Store Project

Although this project still hasn’t even been proposed officially, it’s an idea that seems to make a lot of sense. Much like The Sinclair down in the Gold Coast, this development would involve tearing down an existing Jewel store and developing a new high-rise at the site that would eventually house a new Jewel, along with a plethora of new residential units.
