A neighborhood once full of factories, wholesale markets, and meat packing warehouses is now one of the hottest places to call home in all of Chicago. And now also one of the city’s fastest growing neighborhoods, there’s plenty of great housing opportunities here in the West Loop for home buyers to consider, from authentic and stylish loft conversions to all kinds of newer construction mid-rise developments that blend comfort and convenience with a few soft loft interior finishes to help keep that chic urban feel.
It’s hard to say exactly where the West Loop transformation began, but re-development around the neighborhood really started to explode back in the late 1990s. Along with a few major residential loft conversions, a slew of new restaurants and bars popped up over on Randolph Street around that same time, which has now earned this popular culinary stretch the nickname “Restaurant Row.” Fast forward to today, and now Restaurant Row is comprised of steakhouses, sushi bars, bakeries, breweries, wineries, and burger joints, giving local residents quite the selection of dinner options, not to mention the comfort of knowing you’ll never have to wander far for your next great meal.
In addition to Randolph Street and the core of the West Loop, there’s also a number of smaller sub-neighborhoods that are somewhat part of the area’s landscape as well. Greektown, which got its name from the widespread Greek population that lived here back in the early 1900s, is also loaded with great restaurants and cafes as well, of which many are still inspired by the area’s authentic Greek culture and heritage that still lives on even today. Fulton Market is also another up-and-coming part of the West Loop community, which like its counterpart just a few streets over, is also known for its upscale restaurants and taverns. Fulton Market is also where you’ll find a fairly high concentration of office and small commercial space, making it a hot destination for boutique owners to setup shop and become part of this incredibly diverse and dynamic part of downtown Chicago.
As for real estate in the West Loop, lofts tend to grab the attention of most home buyers considering a move to the area, which range from hard warehouse style lofts to more of a soft loft style of condo, which was mentioned above. If you’re looking for a townhouse or single-family home here in the Windy City, the West Loop neighborhood probably isn’t the best location to begin your home search, but you might get lucky and find a few options on the market, depending on your price range.
