Decluttering Tips For Your House

Before a home goes up for sale, it likely needs to be decluttered. For those who just don’t know where to start, here are a few easy tips:

Go room-by-room

Trying to tackle everything at once can end up overwhelming. Instead, go through the house room-by-room. Think about the first overall impression of every room and what may need to be changed.

Clear bookcases/counters/cabinets

Clear a majority of items off of counters and bookcases, too. Leave a few key home décor items, but nothing personal and definitely not so many items that it detracts from the space. The same goes for cabinets. Buyers will want to see drawers and cabinets so don’t leave them overstuffed.

Clear basements/attics/garages

Don’t forget about basements, attics or garages either. Like closets, this is where all the extra stuff tends to end up. Keeping things organized and tidy will help with a move and help sell a home.

Clear the outside

When the inside is clear, move outside. Rake leaves, clear ice and snow, or simply tidy up. The front yard is often the first thing buyers will notice, but the backyard will also leave an impression.

Clean out closets

Closets often become the place people stash things just to get them out of the way. When it comes to clothing, try cleaning out about half of a wardrobe. This gives buyers a better look at how roomy a closet is, not how many possessions are stuffed inside.

Make a list

As the house is cleared out, make a list of any necessary improvements. Knowing what’s needed to stage or even paint before the home goes up for sale can make a big difference.

Make piles

Once everything is out of a space, make piles of what to keep, what to give away and what to throw away. This is a good time to sell items that are no longer needed, too.
