End of an era; Gold Coast icon shuttersAfter 25-years in Chicago, the infamous Tavern on Rush has officially closed. The famed restaurant wasn’t supposed to close until the end of the year, but that was pushed up two months early to officially close in late October.

Some reports speculate it was just another sign of a strained relationship between owners of the restaurant and the property’s landlords. The long-standing steakhouse stood in Downtown Chicago, overlooking Division and Rush streets for more than two decades.

Over the years, it was known to attract celebrities and politicians. It was also known as one of mainstays of Chicago’s Viagra Triangle. Even before an announcement came out a few months ago stating Tavern on Rush was closing, renderings for a new space were reportedly drawn up.

Those renderings reportedly showed a new restaurant along Rush Street and Bellevue Place, with a sidewalk patio outside. The former red awnings were changed to gold, and a large nameplate with The Tavern name was hung over the sidewalk.

It’s not known whether that could signify a change in branding. The old Tavern on Rush had a menu ranging from steaks and chops to seafood, pasta, local favorites, and sides.

To accommodate some of its long-standing clients over the years, the Tavern on Rush website lists it will accept gift cards from the restaurant at some of the other Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants in Chicago through March of next year, with certain stipulations.

Those restaurants include Tuscany on Taylor Street, Stefani Prime Italian, and Castaways Bar and Grill. Other mentioned restaurants include Bar Cargo Roman Pizza and Broken English Taco Pubs in the Loop, Lincoln Park, and Old Town.
